New Book on Christian Unity--The Next Step

Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants have in many ways moved from diatribe to dialogue. Conversations among theologians achieved significant progress on many issues in the half century since the Catholic Church entered the ecumenical movement in earnest.

In “Christian Unity – The Next Step ‘That They May All Be One’  Kevin E. Mackin, OFM, a popular priest and former college president and professor, posits that the time is ripe for more real-world Christian collaboration.

His new book, sharing Church history and highlighting case studies in theological dialogue, is an enlightening refresher course on Christianity: from the witness of Jesus and the early days of scripture, to the Middle Ages; from the Reformation and revolutions to a divided and divisive Christianity, up to the work of the World Council of Churches and the Second Vatican Council.

The latter events brought a new dawn of renewed agreements. What remains is for Christians to embody more fully in the modern world the desire Jesus expressed: “that they may all be one” (John 17:21).

“The important thing is for Christians to cooperate effectively to address the role of the Church in the world today,” explains Fr. Kevin, who holds up two keys: that in their witness to the living God Christians face together the common challenge of “unbelief”; and that the Church is “always reformable” as Pope John XXIII encouraged.

“It’s an inside job,” says Fr. Kevin, “to look within our Church and remove the ‘wooden beams’ blocking our vision.”
